Happy first night of Chanukah! And happy weekend too!! Here we are once again, and that means it’s time for comments, critiques, thoughts, support, and suggestions.

So let me have it! What were you up to this week? What’s been on your mind? What are you curious to read about? What are YOU interested in?!

As usual, the Feedback Forum will remain here at the top of the page all weekend, so if you’ve got an idea or a question or you just want to introduce yourself and say ‘Oi!’, you can stop back by any time. This is your community, so get involved and have your say!

For those in Portland, we’ve got an awesome event going on this weekend! It’s the Holiday Baketacular at the Bye and Bye on Alberta. Vegan cookies, cupcakes, almond bark, confetti cake, and anything else you can imagine, for sale on Saturday from 2-whenever it’s gone. All the earnings will go to Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary, an awesome cause. I donated some of my almond moonies, so come on out and eat for the animals!

Have the bestest weekend, guys! Stay well!

Hi there, I just found your blog about a week ago and I really love it. I’ve been a vegetarian for about five years now and am planning on going vegan the first of the year. Thanks so much for the great info, I’m sure I’ll need lots of inspiration and support in the coming months (I, unfortunately, love cheese). Keep up the good work!

Hey I can’t remember if I suggested this… but I would like to hear what you think of agave nectar… as a scientist ;) I was doing some research the other day and what I discovered was rather frightening, though not surprising. Just google “agave dangers” and you’ll see what I mean. I would really like to know what you think. You’re awesome!!

You inspired me and I made the time to make some candles. I’ve got soy wax, cinnamon scented candles cooling right now. Then I’m doing some simple beeswax candles. Yay for being creative and cheap! :)

I know that one of the past monday monthly missions was to reduce the plastics in our lives. I was preparing for a cross-country move at the time and was not really able to participate. I went to goodwill this week and bought several small glass bowls to use in my kitchen to help with meal prep and storage. am wondering what to do with my plastic bowls that I still have. Should I take them to goodwill for others to use? Should I throw them away (they do not have a recyclable symbol on them)in order to prevent others from using them and possibly contaminating their food? Should I save them for non-food uses later (holding paint for craft projects etc)? I am also wondering how you feel about plastic wrap? do you prefer to cover dishes with paper towels or clean kitchen rags when using the microwave? What about using it as a cover for all the new lid-less glassware I have when I store the contents in the pantry or fridge? Do you have any alternative ideas? I look forward to hearing your thoughts and as always, thank you so much for the wisdom you share!

@ Sandi Gulin – Welcome! I’m glad you like the blog. And congrats to you for going full vegan. I know it can be difficult at first, so if you have any questions or ever need support, feel free to email me! Luck!

@ sarah – *hides head in sand*

This topic has been in the back of my mind for a while. It’s definitely on the list. I think part of me has just wanted to avoid the whole current controversy, which seems based entirely on the work of one man and 2 papers that he has published. I was sort of waiting for more information to surface . . . but you’re right. It’s time I addressed it. Thanks for keeping me honest! =D

@ Courtney – Yay! So happy I inspired you. How did the cinnamon turn out??

@ Valerie – Hmm, good questions. I think for the old plastic bowl, repurposing them into non-food related uses would be your best bet for now. Maybe paint/craft holders like you said, or possibly planters for seed starts next spring, or even houseplants?

But please please don’t use plastic wrap in the microwave! Eek, that is one of the things I understand as being a BIG no-no. Not to scare you, but yeah, I would definitely avoid that.

I’ve really tried to move away from the microwave period, even going so far as to take it out of the kitchen (it lives in the garage now). But when I do use it, I usually microwave in glass tupperware that has a glass lid (you can see a picture of it in this post) You can find these in varying sizes at thrift stores for super cheap. I love them! But if that seems like too much of a hassle, a cloth napkin works great. Or even a second bowl or small plate over the top. You really just need something to trap in the steam. But please keep all plastic out of the microwave!

For covering pots and stuff that may go into the fridge, I do use aluminum foil when I have to. I definitely recommend foil over plastic, though foil has it’s own issues and ideally I’d be using all glass. But we’re all on a journey, it’s a process filled with small steps forward. It sounds like you’re on a great path – try not to get overwhelmed! It’s awesome that you are already so mindful. =)
